Homemade Almond Butter

December 6, 2023 | Healthy Recipes, Smart Snacks

Make your own homemade almond butter! It's extremely delicious, smooth, creamy, and budget friendly!

Hello Stability Nutrition Friends, Happy Wednesday!

Almond butter is a favorite here at Stability Nutrition, and something we always like to have on hand. It's one of those amazing condiments that is so diverse and seems to be present in most health conscious kitchens. Whether it's enjoyed with crisp apples or added to oatmeal, its versatility and delightful flavor are unmatched.

The price of almond butter in the store is crazy! I was shopping yesterday and saw a 16oz jar for $19.99! Wow! That's too much to pay for ground almonds, especially when you can buy a bag for much less.

Fear not, we have a budget friendly solution for you! If you have a little time, patience, and a powerful food processor or blender, you can easily make almond butter at home!

Homemade almond butter is easy to make. It's incredibly creamy, has a delicate flavor, and offers unparalleled freshness. Spread it on toast, pair it with carrots (a surprisingly amazing combination!), use it in baked goods, add it to smoothies, or enjoy it straight from the spoon. The possibilities are endless!

And what better way to share this delicious creation? Homemade almond butter makes an incredible, heartfelt gift. Spread the love and homemade cheer this holiday season, and make some almond butter for a friend or family member!

Why Make Homemade Almond Butter?

  • It's Super Fresh: Nothing beats the freshness of homemade. You can taste the difference in every bite.

  • It's Budget-Friendly: Making almond butter at home is significantly more cost effective than buying those expensive jars from the store.

  • It's Nutrient-Rich: Almonds are packed with healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium, and vitamin E, making this spread incredibly nutritious.

Helpful Tips:

  • Patience is Key: If you are using a food processor, it might seem like the almonds will never turn creamy, but they always do. Please be patient.

  • Roasted is Better: Roasting almonds enhances their flavor and makes them blend more easily. This is our favorite way to enjoy almond butter! Be sure to let your almonds cool completely before processing.

Homemade Almond Butter

Yield: 16 oz almond butter (equal to one store bought jar)

Ingredients:

1 pound of almonds, or approximately 3 cups, raw or roasted (We recommend roasted for maximum flavor)

A pinch of salt (optional)

1-2 tsp avocado oil for an ultra smooth texture (optional)

1-2 tsp honey or maple syrup for a sweeter almond butter (optional)

Instructions:

  1. If roasting, preheat your oven to 350°F. Spread the almonds on a baking sheet and roast for 10-12 minutes. Let them cool completely.

  2. Food Processor Instructions: Place the almonds in a food processor. Process them, pausing regularly to scrape down the sides. You're going to think that it will never blend, but be patient! The almonds will go from ground powder to clumps, then to a ball against the side of the food processor. Keep scraping down the sides and breaking up the ball. This will take about 15 minutes. If the mixture gets too hot along the way, stop and let it cool for a few minutes. Proceed to step 4.

  3. Blender Instructions: Make sure you are using a high speed blender with a tamper (Vitamix works great here). If roasting your almonds let them cool completely first. Turn your blender on high and use the tamper to push down on the almonds. Continuously push down on the almonds, particularly in the corners. In about one minute you will have almond butter.  Caution: This is incredibly loud!

  4. Once the mixture becomes creamy and smooth, add optional ingredients if desired. If using raw almonds, add the avocado oil.  Blend until super smooth and creamy.

  5. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

  6. Enjoy!
